iFIT Road to Recovery Part 1: I walk in Mexico with Tommy Rivs Puzey
The iFIT Road to Recovery Part 1 series is already one of my must-haves, and it’s no wonder why! This series of 20 short walks is accessible for all fitness levels. The sessions of less than 15 minutes can be inserted into any training schedule, alone or in addition to another type of exercise. With a change of scenery, inspiring advice from Tommy Rivs Puzey, anecdotes, guided tours and magnificent landscapes, I packed my suitcase straight away. The goal is to get walking in Mexico!
Enjoying the benefits of walking through an inspiring series
Road to Recovery Part 1 marks the return of Tommy Rivs Puzey, one of the iFIT community’s favourite coaches. After taking a break to regain his health (he explains his incredible journey in the series), he invites me to follow him on 20 short walks filmed in the most beautiful places in Mexico. This series resonates with me as his second chance to enjoy life while sharing his infectious love for walking and surveying the world’s most beautiful roads. This is what gives this journey its profound appeal. It will be full of emotional sessions, especially if I have already followed Tommy on one of his iFIT journeys in Dubrovnik, the Spanish Canary Islands, Patagonia and other amazing places.
I can follow the series on my treadmill or while walking at home using my smartphone or a tablet. Each workout is about 10 minutes long: the perfect length for a short walk to get away from it all, even when I’m busy. The programme includes low-level routes of less than 1 km along the beaches of Cancun, in the heart of the Sian Ka’an nature reserve on the east coast of the Yucatán, a visit to ancient Muyil ruins, and more.
A physical, personal and cultural journey
Besides taking care of my health by walking, I learn more about the culture of Mexico and experience unique moments like:
- Learning the secrets of tequila making in the heart of an agave field.
- Meeting Luchadores and immersing myself in the culture of the masked wrestlers of Lucha Libre.
- Practising my Spanish on a guided walk with subtitles.
- Learning about the mural art of Tulum and marvelling at the giant wooden sculpture, Ven à la Luz.
- Salivating over delicious Mexican specialities in a Yucatán restaurant as I reward myself for a hard-working session.
- Experiencing a grand finale during the last two sessions when Tommy and I watch a fascinating sacred Temazcal ceremony: an ancient Mexican shamanic ritual designed to purify and relax.
- And much more!
I don’t feel like I’m exercising, but I’m easily burning 30-50 calories per session while enriching my culture and mental strength as Tommy talks to me, tells me stories and encourages me along the way.
10 ways to incorporate the Road to Recovery series into my training schedule
This series is definitely one to do over and over again, and I already have plenty of reasons for incorporating it into my daily schedule:
- To start or get back into exercise easily.
- If I’m a senior citizen, I can stay active without straining or hurting my joints.
- After a pregnancy to resume my post-partum training.
- To resume physical activity gently following rehabilitation after an injury.
- To warm up before exercising.
- To recover after a race or training session (cycling, weight training, fitness, rowing, etc.).
- To complete my morning routine and start the day off right.
- To take a break at the office or at home if I’m working remotely.
- During my lunch break to help my digestion and get my mind off any professional concerns.
- In the evening to fall asleep with Mexico on my mind!
I’ve found a new favourite among the vast selection of workouts available on the iFIT library. See you soon; my trainer is waiting for me to take a walk along the Playa Delfines in the Cancún sun!
