These 5 fruits help me achieve my weight loss goal
Eating fruit is good for my health, but can it really help me lose weight? Diuretic, fat-burning or full of fibre, but not too rich in sugar, here are the 5 fruits considered to be the most effective to help me lose weight, in addition to my sports routine and a balanced diet, of course!
Why is fruit considered an ally for weight loss?
Beyond their richness in vitamins and their antioxidant properties, fruits have a reputation for promoting weight loss. Is this a myth or a reality? Here are some tips to help me make the right decisions:
- Fruit is sweet, but fructose (the sugar in fruit) has a low glycemic index. For the same pleasure as a glucose-rich product, fruit does not cause a big blood sugar spike. This saves me the cravings I have for many processed treats.
- The main advantage of fruit is its fibre content, which facilitates digestion and has great satiating power. So fruit is perfect for cutting hunger and giving me just the right amount of energy without overloading my digestive system or giving me too much fat.
- Fruit is rich in water and helps me to maintain a good level of hydration, which is essential when trying to lose weight.
- The vitamins and minerals in fresh fruit help the body with various processes. By eating a variety of fruits, I give my body a boost!
5 fruits to choose from when trying to lose weight
As slimming aids, appetite suppressants and fat burners, some fruits have acquired a flattering reputation, sometimes this is validated by science, and sometimes it’s a little exaggerated. To choose the best fruits for weight loss, I’m banking on the best values:
- Apples: the ultimate slimming fruit, they are very rich in fibre and help you to feel full quickly. Taken 15 minutes before a meal, an apple can reduce the calories absorbed without deprivation, by limiting hunger. Researchers are also interested in the benefits of apples on lipid profiles and blood sugar levels. Choose organic apples and eat them whole: their skin contains ursolic acid, a compound whose potential effects on fat burning have been studied in the fight against obesity.
- Watermelon: less sweet than some other types of melon; it contains over 90% water! Its high fibre content makes it more satiating than the same amount of calories in the form of biscuits: it is the ideal slimming snack in summer.
- Berries and forest fruits, such as blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, are low in calories and rich in antioxidants, vitamins and fibre.
- Grapefruit is known to accelerate weight loss: though its fat-burning power is often exaggerated, it is hydrating and low in calories. It is just as interesting as lemons, oranges and other citrus fruits for providing fibre and vitamins to the body and facilitating lymphatic drainage.
- Another food eaten to melt away those extra pounds is pineapple, which owes its success to its bromelain content, which is, unfortunately, more present in its stem and leaves than in its pulp. Moisturising and rich in fibre, minerals and vitamins, pineapple can still be included in a slimming menu in reasonable doses (due to its sweetness).
How can I incorporate fruit into my weight loss plan
To sum up, unfortunately, fruit has no miracle power for weight loss, but it fulfils all the conditions that facilitate my approach, so I make room for it on my plate with great pleasure by following a few basic rules:
- I take care to eat fruit in moderation, to avoid absorbing too much sugar and to balance my meals: I adopt fruit, yes, but not “as much as I want”. Instead, I integrate fruit into a balanced and complete approach.
- I prefer fresh fruit, eaten whole. In juice or compotes, fruit provides me with less fibre and vitamins and is, therefore, less useful for losing weight. As always, the best thing is to diversify my meals as much as possible.
